Tacoma Headlight Buying Guide (2018–2026)

Three designs — and the 2024 reset

The Tacoma’s 3rd generation (N300) ran 2016–2023 with a facelift for 2020, and the all-new 4th generation (N400) arrived for 2024. That leaves three distinct headlight fitments — 2018–2019, 2020–2023, and 2024–2026 — and none interchange. The 4th gen is a clean-sheet truck: nothing from a 2023 bolts onto a 2024.

Year Range Generation Headlight Notes
2018–2019 3rd gen (N300) pre-facelift Halogen projector on SR/SR5; LED on TRD Pro / Limited
2020–2023 3rd gen (N300) facelift Revised grille and lighting; LED spread to more trims — not interchangeable with 2018–2019
2024–2026 4th gen (N400, all-new) LED standard; entirely new design — verify fitment, catalog still maturing

The TRD factor

No midsize truck has a stronger trim culture than the Tacoma. TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trucks get driven harder and modified more — which means more headlight replacements from trail damage and more LED upgrade demand. Match the assembly to your exact sub-generation first; the trim then decides halogen vs. LED, not the other way around.

Halogen vs. LED by trim

Pre-facelift 3rd-gen SR and SR5 trucks used halogen projectors; TRD Pro and Limited got LED. The 2020 facelift pushed LED down into more trims, and the 4th gen standardized it. Upgrading means a complete LED assembly for your sub-generation — never LED bulbs in a halogen projector.

Trail damage is real

Tacomas actually go off-road — branches, brush, and gravel take out headlights at a higher rate than on pavement-only trucks. If you wheel your truck, inspect the mounting tabs as well as the lens: a cracked tab means the whole assembly, not just a bulb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 2022 Tacoma headlights fit my 2024?

No. The 2024 Tacoma is the all-new 4th generation (N400) with completely different headlights. 2016–2023 assemblies do not fit.

Is a 2019 headlight the same as a 2020?

No. The 2020 facelift changed the front-end lighting fitment. 2018–2019 (pre-facelift) and 2020–2023 (facelift) are not interchangeable.

I have a TRD Pro. Are the headlights different?

TRD Pro trucks came with LED headlights while base trims used halogen projectors — but the assembly is decided by year/sub-generation first, trim lighting type second.

Can I upgrade my halogen headlights to LED?

Yes, with complete LED assemblies built for your exact sub-generation. Do not install LED bulbs into the factory halogen projector.
